Where People Actually Go at The Wharf

The Wharf runs about a mile along the Washington Channel, with piers, a promenade and water taxis. It's one of DC's biggest draws for concerts, dinners out and weekend walks.

  • The Anthem and nearby Pearl Street Warehouse host concerts across a range of genres, bringing crowds to the waterfront before and after shows.
  • The Municipal Fish Market is the oldest continuously operating open-air fish market in the country. People line up for steamed crabs and fried fish on the water.
  • Del Mar, Fabio Trabocchi's Spanish seafood restaurant, is flashy and huge, and The Infatuation says the cooking lives up to the room.
  • Fish Shop, a Scottish import with a mid-Atlantic seafood menu, and Rappahannock Oyster Bar are the go-to raw bars.
  • Kinfolk serves barbecue and bourbon, La Vie pairs Mediterranean food with rooftop drinks, and Pink Tiger recently opened on Wharf Street.
  • Capitano, a coastal Italian restaurant at the Canopy by Hilton, recently opened with open-air seating and waterfront views.
  • The piers themselves. Recreation Pier, Transit Pier and District Pier anchor the waterfront, with concerts, markets and seasonal events at different spots.

The Wharf by the Numbers

  • Who's behind it. PN Hoffman developed The Wharf, and District Wharf Properties manages and operates it.
  • 447,000 SF of retail, 904 apartments, 412 hotel rooms and 928,000 SF of offices are in the portion of The Wharf covered by a financing, according to a Fitch report cited by Bisnow. The whole development is larger.
  • More choices on the water. Merchants Marina Bar & Lounge and JINYA Ramen Bar recently opened on Wharf Street, and Brisa, a coastal Latin restaurant from the team behind La Vie and Kinfolk, is coming soon to Buzzard Point near Audi Field.

What Tenants Should Know at The Wharf

  • Plan for different trading periods. Compare concert nights, weekends, ordinary weekdays and winter trade when you plan sales.
  • Landlord rules on top of DC's. Parts of The Wharf are held under long-term ground leases with the District. Check the specific space's lease, the landlord's design standards for storefronts, signs and patios, and its approval process alongside DC permits.
  • DC permits: building permits and the Certificate of Occupancy come from the Department of Buildings, the business license from the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection, food-safety review and inspections from DC Health, and liquor licenses from the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration.
